Readiness check-in

Sixty seconds. One decision.

Grassroots players don’t get a sports scientist on Tuesday morning. The check-in gives you the next best thing: a quick, honest read of how ready you are, compared with your own normal.

What you do

  1. Three jumps

Countermovement jumps, hands on hips, same shoes and surface. The app averages them.

  2. Four taps

Sleep, soreness, energy, and mood and stress, each 1 to 5.

  3. Minutes played

After a double-header or midweek game it also asks for your minutes across both games.

How it decides

Countermovement jumps and short self-report questionnaires are among the better-supported, low-cost ways to track how an athlete is responding to training Claudino et al. 2017 Saw et al. 2016. The cut-offs are practice defaults and are reviewed after the first season.

Green

Jumps and wellness in line with your normal. The session runs as planned.

Amber

Jumps down by more than your own day-to-day noise, or wellness well below normal. Same weights, about a third less volume.

Red

A bigger drop, or two amber days in a row. Move the session to tomorrow, or run the recovery version.

Learns first

For the first three weeks the app only records. No readiness flags until it knows your normal, only the safety rules.

Watch data, if you want it

Apple Health or Health Connect can add resting heart rate, HRV and sleep. Sleep fills the weekly sleep question for you; you can correct it.

Under-18s

A simpler three-item emoji check-in plus the jump test. Watch data stays off unless the player opts in.

Illness always overrides a green score: symptoms only above the neck mean a lighter day; fever or whole-body symptoms mean no training. The check-in is a training tool, not a medical test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure jump height?

Do three countermovement jumps with hands on hips, same shoes and same surface each time. The phone times your flight. The app uses the average of the three and compares it with your normal for that day of the week.

What happens on a red day?

You choose: move the session to tomorrow, or run a recovery version with the same exercises, lighter loads, half the sets and no flat-out sprints. Missed sessions are never “made up” later.

Does my watch decide for me?

No. HRV and resting heart rate are compared with your own rolling normal and count as one amber vote at most. They never block a session on their own. HRV-guided training gave only small extra gains in endurance athletes, and there’s no football trial yet Manresa-Rocamora et al. 2021.

Can I ignore it?

Yes. Every change shows a one-line reason and one tap overrides it. Safety locks for head injury, pain and illness are the only things you can’t override.
